The Aussie slang

I've always known that the Australians have their unique "English terminology" but I didn't quite realize how vast it is until I settled here. When a new word pops, I think people would always note that I don't understand because they would be quick to explain what it means. I would always have to listen carefully and exert extra effort to get context clues (and pick up the accent). It's a good thing too that my aunt and uncle use Aussie slang in daily conversations. It makes the words sound more normal to me. :p

I used to find it odd that they have to create their own words (and confuse foreigners like myself) but I have since learned that the laid-back and happy-go-lucky view to life that the Aussies are known for are manifested in their slang. Here are some of the words that I've gathered. Might be useful to you when you come for a holiday!
  • Arvo - Afternoon
  • Aussie - Australian
  • Brekky - Breakfast
  • Bikkie - Biscuit
  • Bludger/Bludging - Slacker/Slacking (Petiks to the Filipinos. This is my favorite word thus far)
  • Bizzo - Business
  • Chuck a sickie - call in sick when you are perfectly healthy
  • Chemist - Pharmacy
  • Flat white - Coffee with Milk
  • Fairy Floss - Cotton Candy
  • Good on ya - Good for you
  • Have a go - Try it
  • Holiday - Vacation
  • Kiwi - New Zealander
  • Lippy - Lispstick
  • Maccas/Mackers - McDonalds
  • Mozzie - mosquito
  • Mate - Friend
  • Pommie - An Englishman
  • Rubbish - Garbage
  • Return ticket - Round trip ticket
  • Sunnies - Sunglasses
  • She'll be right - It'll be okay
  • Throw a drink at - Buy a drink for
  • Tomato sauce - ketchup
  • Take-away - take-out
  • Ta! - Thank you
  • Ta-dah! - Goodbye
  • Thongs - slippers
  • Uni - University
  • Up oneself - High opinion of oneself
  • Verbal diarrhea - Talk nonstop
And there's a whole lot more which I have yet to get used to! Ta-dah! =D
